7 June, 2012 International Conference “Public exposure and lessons learned during accidental events in the world” will be organized
The organizers of the International Conference are the Ministry of Health of Republic of Lithuania, Radiation Protection Centre of Lithuania, Lithuanian Radiation Protection Society.
Objective
The International Conference is organized to discuss issues of radiation protection, radioecology, evaluation of public exposure, nuclear safety, and development of nuclear energy, management of radioactive waste, preparedness and response to nuclear and radiological accidents and health effects of radiation. The International Conference is dedicated to the 15 years activity of Radiation Protection Centre of Lithuania.

Authors of selected materials will be informed by 11 March, 2012.
Selected materials will be published in scientific journal with peer review process; articles are accepted in English and Lithuanian language.
Technical exhibition is foreseen.

Radiation Protection Society (LRPS) was founded on the 26th of April
2001. 46 regular members joined the society at the day of establishment. Among
the regular members were specialists with the higher education working in the
institutions for scientific research, education, health care, environment
protection, radiation protection, etc. The board of the members endorsed the
Statute of the organization, elected the Board and the Chairman of the society,
Dr. A. Mastauskas. All members of the Board shared responsibilities. It was
decided that Dr. R. Gagienë will be responsible for the environment protection and organizational
work, Dr. G. Morkûnas – for international relations, Dr.V. Remeikis – for
scientific problems, Dr. A. Vaitkus – for radiation protection in medicine,
Dr. D. Ðidiðkienë will act as a Secretary of the Board. Revision Commission
was elected as well. The Board of LRPS approved a strategy of joining similar
international organizations.
Activities
in 2001-2002
Meetings
A meeting of the LRPS Board was held in Vilnius on September 5, 2001. During the meeting there were surveyed issues concerning legal registration of the Society by the Lithuanian Ministry of Justice, progress in seeking membership in the International Radiation Protection Association (IRPA) and plans for future activities were discussed. On the 21st of May 2001 Lithuanian Radiation Protection Society was registered in the Ministry of Justice by the order of Minister No. 78-V. Bank accounts in national and foreign currencies were opened for the Society in commercial bank Vilniaus Bankas on the 20th of June 2001. On the 6 of June 2001 society was registered by the Board of State Insurance Foundation in Vilnius city branch and in Vilnius Region Tax Inspection.
A member of the Board Dr.G.Morûnas translated the Statute of the organization into English and prepared the appeal for joining the IRPA organization. The appeal was sent to the headquarters of IRPA in France. Vice-chairman of IRPA Dr.P. Metcalf intercedes for the Lithuanian society during joining of the IRPA. On the 14-15 of June 2002 Lithuanian Radiation Protection Society was accepted to the IRPA as a full member.
Conferences
Society actively participated in organization of the International conference „Radiation Protection Today“. The conference was organized on the 26th of April 2002 and about 180 participants took part in it. About 30 specialists form different spheres made their presentations, submitted articles into proceedings of the conference or exposed their posters. Representatives from international and foreign institutions working in the field of regulation in radiation protection took part in the conference as well. They made presentations on urgent problems of today in radiation protection, talked about necessity to develop international co-operation, presented the achieved results, and etc. Among participant were: UNSCEAR – Dr.N.Gentner; Nordic Radiation Protection Society – Dr.T.Bennerstedt; Swedish Radiation Protection Regulation institution - Dr.L.-E. Holm, Dr.B.A. Persson, Dr.G.Akerblom; Finish radiation protection institution – R.Mustonen; Latvian Environment Protection Agency – Dr. A. Kirilova, Dr. V. Graveris.
Seminars
Lithuanian Radiation Protection Society in a co-operation with Radiation Protection Centre has organized the following seminars for the specialists from various fields:
„Radon inside of the buildings. Ways to reduce it“, 29th of November 2001, was held in Birþai. 27 participants attended the seminar which was organized jointly with the specialists from Swedish Radiation Protection Regulation institution.
„Optimization of the doses for patients in radiology“, 11th of April 2002, Panevëþys, Ðiauliai, 38 participants, organized together with the specialists from Holland;
„Requirements for the monitoring of internal exposure“, 30th of April 2002, Vilnius, 33 participants;
„Organization of the individual health care after radiological or nuclear accident“, 9th of May 2002, Vilnius, 83 participants, organized together with the Centre for Management of Extreme Situations for Health;
„Introduction of the quality systems in the medical radiology“, 15-16th of May 2002, Vilnius, 27 participants, organized together with the specialist from Sweden;
„Radiation protection in the roentgen diagnostic and basics of the radiation protection“, 20th of June 2002, Vilnius, 25 participants, organized together with the specialists from Holland;
„Radon inside buildings. Ways to reduce it“, 20th of November 2002, Klaipëda, 26 participants, was organized jointly with the specialist from Sweden.
„Installation of the quality systems in the medical radiology“, 25-26 of November 2002, Vilnius, 39 participants, organized together with the specialist from Sweden.
Activities
in 2003
Meetings
At the General Assembly of the society members on the 3rd of April 2003 there were presented reports on the LRPS activities held in the year 2002 and report of the revision commission for the year. The following questions were discussed during the meeting:
declaration of the LRPS chairman;
amendments of the LRPS statute;
admission of new members and exemption of 3 members;
status
of medical physicist.
There was presented a report on decommission of the 1st block of the Ignalina nuclear power plant and radiation safety problems, film about work of Radiation Protection Centre was shown. Meeting accepted retirement of the Dr.A.Mastauskas from the post of LRPS chairman. A new chairman was elected by a unanimous vote - T.Nedveckaitë, doctor of technical sciences. LRPS had 50 members at the date of 3rd April 2003.
On the 3rd of December 2003 there was hold meeting of the LRPS board. Charmin of the LRPS Dr.T.Nedveckaitë, members of the board Dr.G.Morkûnas, Dr.A.Vaitkus, Dr.R.Gagienë, Dr. D. Ðidiðkienë, member and ex-chairman of the of LRPS, director of Radiation Protection Centre – Dr. A. Mastauskas took part in the meeting. The following issues were discussed:
organization of the international conference “Radiation Protection- 2004”;
creation of the internet site about activities of the LRPS;
questions on co-operation with the other organizations.
Dr. G. Morkûnas emphasized importance to establish contacts with other Lithuanian scientific societies. First of all better contacts should be kept with the Lithuanian society of Physicists, Lithuanian Association of Radiologist. Representatives of the organizations should be invited to take part in the conferences organized by the LRPS.
Conferences
Lithuanian Radiation Protection Society together with the Lithuanian Radiation Protection Centre, Institute of Botanic and Swedish Radiation Protection Regulation institution have organized international conference „Radiation Protection- 2003“. It was hold on the 25th of April 2003. The conference was devoted to discuss improvement and harmonization of the Lithuanian radiation protection infrastructure on the way of joining European Union. There was presented state of the radiation protection system and results of exposure assessment to human and environment, scientific achievements in radiation protection and radioecology. Also some aspects on assurance of the radiation safety in medicine, decommission of the nuclear energy exploitation, radioactive waste management, preparedness to radiological and nuclear accidents were discussed. Results of investigation of exposure consequences for inhabitants after the Chernobyl Nuclear Power plant accident were demonstrated. Colleagues form foreign countries: Belgium, Denmark, Latvia, Poland, Finland and Sweden participated in the meeting. They presented results of their recent investigations in radioecology and radiation protection, carried on in the framework of international projects.
Seminars
LRPS and Radiation Protection Centre organized several seminars for specialists:
“Radiation protection and insurement of quality in roentgenoscopy”, 25-27th of February 2003, Kaunas, Klaipëda, Ðiauliai, 94 participants;
“Radiation protection in medicine”, 26th of November 2003, seminar was organized by the Radiation Protection Centre, LRPS and specialists from Holland;
“Radioactive waste management and dose assessment”, 16-17th of December 2003, seminar was organized by the Radiation Protection Centre, LRPS and Swedish institution for radiation safety.

Conferences
May 23-28, 2004 during IRPA 11 Congress in Madrid 3 presentations were made by the members of LRPS:
· Servomaa A., Filippova F., Morkûnas G. The necessity of optimization of medical exposure in countries – candidates of EU.
· Morkûnas G., Pilkytë L. Residence related exposure in Lithuania- from national survey to remedial measures.
· Mastauskas A., Sidiskienë D., Nedveckaitë T., Filistovic V. Some remarks related to the iodine prophylaxis during nuclear accident.
April 18, 2004. International conference ,,Radiation Protection in the Context of Euratom Treaty, 2004” was organized together with the Lithuanian Institute of Botany and Sweden SSI. 124 participants from Lithuania, European Commission, National Riso Laboratory (Denmark), Metrology Laboratory in Netherlands, Nordic and other countries attended the Conference.
Seminars
November 25, 2004 Seminar „Indoor radon. The ways to reduce“ was organized in Kaunas with SSI, Sweden. 34 participants attended the Seminar.
Activities in 2005 –2007
Website of LRPS was created www.rsc.lt/LRSD and logo was approved in 2005.
LRPS General Conference
November 15, 2007 Reports of Chairman and Auditors were approved, elections of board, chairman, 2 auditors, commission of ethics took place. Amendment of LRPS statute and approval of Codex of Ethics was made.
Meetings
Two meetings of Board were organized November 15, 2007. In the first one 18 new persons were accepted as regular members and 2 regular members were excluded on their own asking.
In the next meeting a Chairman and a Treasurer were appointed.
Conferences
April 26-29, 2005 3-rd International Conference “Metals in the Environmental”, organized together by Lithuanian metal ecology association, Institute of Geography and Geology and LRPS, members of LRPS made 13 presentations.
January 26, 2007 International Conference „Radiation Protection Centre – 10 years of experience“, Vilnius. Presentation „Lithuanian radiation protection society-5 anniversary“ was made by President of LRPS Ms. T. Nedveckaitë.
November 15, 2007 LRPS Conference related to radioecology and nuclear power plants. Presentations by scientists from Institute of Physics, Institute of Botany, Institute of Geology and Geography and by staff of Radiation Protection Centre, “Lietuvos energija” were performed.
Seminars
February 28-March 3, 2005 Training course organized by LRPS with institutions involved in the Netherlands project MATRA “Implementation of quality systems in the computer tomography”.
December 5, 2006 Seminar in Vilnius related to the new ICRP recommendations, UNSCEAR reports, lectures were given by Mr. Abel Gonzalez.
April 19, 2007 Seminar „Optimization of radiation protection for patients in diagnostic radiology“. Lectures related to the optimization of radiation protection in diagnostic radiology, computer tomography, mammography, pediatric radiology, patients dose estimation in Great Kingdom and Finland were given.
November 15, 2007, Visaginas Seminar „Peculiarities of medical response in case of radiological emergency. Experience of Visaginas hospital“, 38 participants.
December 19, 2007, Klaipëda and December 20, 2007, Vilnius Seminars „Radiation Protection in Pediatric Radiology“, 60 participants. Seminars were organized within IAEA national project, lectures from Finland were involved.
Activities in 2008
Board meetings and activities
LRSD Board meeting took place at 2008-10-21 where the schedule for the seminar related to the dose assessment methodologies was discussed and problems for optimization of payment of annual member duties were analysed. Decision of LRSD Board was issued that each member of Association is responsible to pay annual duties and no cancelation is foreseen for that.
Members of LRSD Board performed rating persons for RPA European Executing Board.
During the preparation for the IRPA 12 Congress in Buenos Aires 19-24 October 2008 m. the answers to the Questioner regarding the information about Association were given.
Participation in IRPA 12 Congress and General Assembly
A. Mastauskas, Director of Radiation Protection Centre, participated in IRPA 12 Congress and General Assembly with 2 votes dedicated to LRSD.

Payment of annual duties to IRPA
Annual duties payment for the year 2009 was made at 10 December, 2008 according asking of IRPA Treasure for 45 LRSD members, 3 USD for each of member, total payment 135 USD).
Seminars
October 11, 2008, Kaunas. Seminar „Experience of program for the mammography screening” was organized jointly with Association of Health Physicists and Association of Radiologists (26 participants).
December 11, 2008, Vilnius. Seminar „Experience in methodology of dose assessment“, organized jointly with Radiation Protection Centre and Association of Health Physicists (47 participants).
Activities in 2009
Board meetings and activities
LRSD Board meeting took place at 2009-10-12 where discussion related with problems of payment of annual member duties was analyzed. Decision of LRSD Board was issued that each member of Association is responsible to pay annual dues. The last call should be performed for members that not paid dues for two years with asking to pay dues or to cancel membership in Association.
One more Board meeting was held on 20 November 2009. The main task of the meeting was to discuss the plan for reorganization of Radiation Protection Centre and VATESI. Board members agreed that if the opinion regarding such reorganization of two institutions and the issues of radiation protection will be needed Board is ready to prepare press release by Association.
Seminars
2009-01-21, Vilnius. Seminar on the NORM related problems and presentation of system for management of radwaste containing NORM in Nederland. Lecture was given by Rob Wiegers (IBR Consult BV, Nederland, IAEA expert).
2009-09-24, Vilnius. International Conference „Radiation and Nuclear Safety for Enhancing Civil Security“, organized by Radiation Protection Centre, Lithuanian Radiation Protection Association, Ministry of Health. The International Conference was organized to discuss problems of radiation protection, radioecology, and new plans for development of nuclear energy, management of radioactive waste and preparedness and response to nuclear and radiological accidents. The Conference was related with Presidency of Lithuania for the Baltic Sea States Council, July 2009- June 2010. Twelve oral presentations and 16 posters were presented. More than 70 participants were registered from Lithuania, Belarus, Russia and Ukraine. Selected papers of the International Conference were published in special issue „Visuomenës sveikata“, 2009, Annex 1.
Activities in 2010 till Society Meeting in 26 April 2011
Board meetings
LRSD Board meeting took place at 26 April 2011 for the analysis of new applications for membership in Society. 18 applications were received till Board meeting. All applicants meet requirements for the membership and the Board decided to take the applicants as new members for Society with asking of the Society Meeting to approve that consideration.

Annual duties payment for the year 2010 was made at 4 March, 2010 according asking of IRPA Treasure for 45 LRSD members;
